A book with 28 portraits
How can we make people more aware of lymphoedema and lipoedema? In 2012, Els Brouwer and Joyce Bosman from NLNet, the Dutch network of people with lymphoedema and lipoedema came up with the idea of compiling a book in which people would talk about their illness and how they deal with it.
The result is a truly remarkable book, with 28 portraits and personal stories. Patients tell their story together with a loved one or someone who is closely involved with them, such as a partner, mother, child, sister or therapist. These
stories are very varied, and feature children, teenagers, women and men. Each individual has his or her own story to tell. The reader learns what lymphoedema and lipoedema involve and the effect the diseases can have on one’s life.
But the book offers more. It provides back- ground information and an introduction by Dr Robert J. Damstra of Dutch Expertise Centre for Lymphovascular Medicine Nij Smellinghe Hospital, Drachten (NL). In this way, the book becomes more than just a book of beautiful photographs. It is a work of reference.
